I've reported map errors where a company has been for months, and I mean a big company, on several acres of property, and it's been months and still no map update. The bad news is the Garmin maps are not updated quickly. Cell phones load onl y the basic skeleton of the whole route, and rely on your service connection to fill in the details and keep you updated. A cell phone app loads your map mostly where you are located, and adds necessary updates to the maps as your trip progresses. It is using strictly satellite data to track your progress. Garmin does not rely on a connection to the internet or 4G or other service from a cell tower. However, the Garmin offers something that the cell phone and all the navigating apps you can load do not have: navigation when your cell phone loses coverage. For most places you go, this may be fine. I would say that your most accurate navigating device at present is a large screen cell phone running an app like Waze. It's first important to know the difference between a unit like the Garmin and a navigation device such as a cellphone which relies on the internet and location services. ![]()
